What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabidiol, also referred to as CBD, is the chemical compound derived directly from the cannabinoids found within the hemp plant. Cannabinoids are any of a group of closely related chemical compounds that act on cannabinoid receptors. These cannabinoid receptors are found throughout the body (see image below) and help maintain the bodies homeostasis. The bodies homeostasis is maintained when cannabinoids react with the two cannabinoid receptors, Cannabinoid Receptor Type 1 (CB1), and Cannabinoid Receptor Type 2 (CB2). These receptors, plus the cannabinoids that activate them, help create the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

What is the

Function of the ECS?

The main function of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is to maintain the body’s homeostasis through the production of cannabinoid receptors. The two main cannabinoid receptors are cannabinoid 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid 2 (CB2). These two main receptors receive three types of cannabinoids:

  • Endocannabinoids – Cannabinoids our body naturally produces
  • Phytocannabinoids – Cannabinoids that natural plants product
  • Synthetic Cannabinoids – Cannabinoids that are created artificially in a lab

These cannabinoids have a wide range of effects on the human body, all of which occur when your cannabinoid receptors are activated. Cannabinoids that serve both medicinal and recreational purposes change the way we feel. Every function in the human body requires a specific balance of factors to perform at optimal capacity. When the body achieves this balance, it’s called homeostasis. This homeostasis occurs as cannabinoids interact with the Endocannabinoid System’s receptors throughout the body.
